Orwell- Marvel Marie Mead, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at UH-Geauga after a brief illness.
She was the daughter of Fred and Frances M. (Gaines) Stuart and was born on June 9, 1928 in Geneva, Ohio, but was raised from age 8 by John and Esther VanHee of New Lyme, Ohio. Marvel attended New Lyme Deming School, where she graduated with the class of 1947. She loved to tell the story, where she picked her future husband, Maynard, on the first day of their freshman year. They would marry on December 20, 1947, at the New Lyme Presbyterian Church and have celebrated 74 years of marriage. As a result of this wonderful union, two wonderful daughters were born, Amy Lynne and Julie Ann. In Marvel’s early years, she worked for Carlisle Allen in Ashtabula, Geauga Industries and Johnson Rubber of Middlefield. In 1967 she was instrumental in starting the Orwell Thrift Store, and operated it for 5 years. She was a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Marvel was a faithful member of Orwell North Presbyterian Church, where she served as Deacon.
She loved to crochet and in her later years, gave much of her work away. In addition, she enjoyed selling Avon. Marvel enjoyed going to yard sales, meeting new people and never met a stranger. Her home was open to all and enjoyed working in her yard and flower gardens.
She is survived by the love of her life, Maynard J. Mead; daughters, Amy (Michele Reiner) Richards of Tucson, Arizona and Julie (Robert) Lukon of Latrobe, Pennsylvania; 5 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Mary Marie; her parents; and two brothers, William and Eugene Brewer.
