Jacob Nicholes Obituary

Orwell - Jacob “Jake” Nicholes, age 94, passed away peacefully surrounded with loving care, support and comfort on Monday, February 26, 2018 at The Convalarium Care Center of Dublin, under the care of hospice. Due to Jake’s declining health he spent the last four months at his daughter Donna’s home in Columbus. He was born November 1, 1923, in New Lyme, the son of Agaphia and George Nicholes.

Jacob graduated from Rome High School, Kent State University and Edinboro University. He was married on July 31, 1945 at St. Mary’s Church in Orwell. Jake was retired from Grand Valley School System in 1986 following 31 years of teaching mostly in the Colebrook Elementary School location. He was a member of the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years and a member of South Central Ambulance Dispatch for 18 years.  Jacob was a member of St. Mary’s Church.  He enjoyed bowling, fishing, all sports, and mowing his lawn.

Jake was a WWII U.S.M.C. D-Day Era Veteran, serving in the European and Pacific Theatre. He served on the U.S.S. General W.P. Richardson 1945 – 1946, departing from the Boston Port of Embarkation. During her first year of commission, with Jacob mustered aboard, she traveled more than 90,000 miles, transporting 64,431 troops, 3,147 wounded, and fighting men of many famous armies. Jake was an American Legion Member, Post #719 in Orwell.

He is survived by his children, Ronald G. Nicholes of New Haven, CT, Donna L. Nicholes of Columbus, Ohio, and Darek A. Nicholes of Pittsburgh, PA and his two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie J. Nicholes, who passed February 6, 2012, his parents and siblings: Harry, Joseph, Walter Nicholes, and sister Vera Urban.

 A private committal service of his ashes will be held at the Orwell North Cemetery.
