Irene Mate

Irene Mate (Kish) of Colebrook, Ohio, passed away February 18, 2020.  She was born on February 24, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio.  Irene was the daughter of Louis and Maria Toth Kish, immigrants of Hungary.

She married Paul S. Mate on October 23, 1943. In 1947, they made their home in Colebrook Township.  They were married for 54 years until Paul’s death in 1997.  Irene was also preceded in death by her parent, brother, Elmer Kish, and daughter, Melanie Jane.

She was the mother of 15 children, Victoria (Daniel) Vranjes, Elizabeth (David) Lindgren, Paul (Margaret) Mate, Claudia Holmes, Bo (Maria) Mate, Mary (George) Mate, Chris Mate, Melanie Mate, Valerie Feltrin, Julie Mate, Stephanie (Michael) Cole, Jonathan (Debbie) Mate, Matthew (Sherry) Mate, Stacy (Dave) Rebeck, and Bob (Michelle) Mate.  Additionally, her legacy resulted in 31 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Her love of family resulted in her community involvement; in the local school parent/teacher association as past secretary and vice president; also as past secretary of the Colebrook Homecoming Committee.  Additional enjoyments included reading, quilting, gardening, and working word puzzles.

We are thankful for her longtime Colebrook friend Pat Chunyo and her daughter Laurie for their weekly visitations for companionship and personal home assistance.  Lastly, a special appreciation for the help from the Hospice of Western Reserve staff for their professional and compassionate care provided over the last several months.

A funeral service officiated by Pastor Laurie Krieg will be held at the Paine Funeral Home, Inc., 140 E. Main Street, Orwell, OH 44076 on Saturday, February 22, 2020, 11:00 a.m., burial will follow at Colebrook North Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, February 21, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the Grand Valley Public Library, address: (1 North School Street, P.O.
