Orwell - Carl Adam Plickert, age 93, peacefully left this life on Friday, April 14, 2023. Carl was born on May 24, 1929 in the same New Hudson Road farmhouse where his parents Adam and Florence (Hopkins) Plickert raised him to love that land, the river running through it and the wildlife that flourished there. But for a stint in the United States Navy and the early years of his marriage, Carl spent his entire life on New Hudson Road, less than a mile from that farm. Carl said that serving his country as a sailor was one of the best decisions of his life, especially since it led him to another—meeting and marrying a spirited WAVE from Newton, Massachusetts, Elisabeth Anne (Betty) Boudreau. Their story was the classic ‘country boy meets and falls in love with city girl’ and moving back to Orwell from Betty’s hometown took some getting used to for his bride. Through their 51 years together, they raised four children: JoAnne Kara Clobus, Naomi Plickert McMillan, Eric Carl (1963-2013) and Kim Ellen Plickert, instilling in each a lasting appreciation for smalltown, rural life. Carl was a talented draftsman, retiring from Kennametal, Inc. after a 35-year career. He also designed several local residences and commercial buildings through the years. He was a devout member of the Orwell North Church, adding his unmistakable alto singing voice to the choir every Sunday morning for many years. Summertime was when he could often be seen tending to his large garden, which Betty always lamented produced more vegetables than any family could possibly consume in a year. He was a great dancer and roller skater and taught his daughters how to polka at wedding receptions to ensure he always had a ready partner. Carl’s spirituality provided him with a sense of peace and acceptance in his final days, saying “I’ve had a great life.” “CAP” will be deeply missed by ‘his girls’ and his many friends and family members, including grandchildren William James and Jonathan Adam McCliment, Andrea Barrie McMillan and Keegan Glenwood Plickert Friend and great granddaughter Olive Nova McCliment. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty and son, Eric.
