Orwell Twp. - Richard Wayne “Dick” Hiestan, age 73, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019 from multiple medical complications.He was born on May 27, 1945 near Delphos OH. Dick graduated from Delphos Jefferson High School in 1963. Shortly after high school, he joined the Army, serving his country for four years, stationed in England and Germany. The U.S. Army taught him to be fluent in Morse Code, with intelligence gathering as the primary focus of his Army duty.
In the summer of 1969, Dick met Christine Kellogg and they were married June 20, 1970, at the Rome Presbyterian Church. For 10 years, they made their home in Delphos and were blessed with two daughters Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” and Janet Katherine.
Dick was a truck driver, working first for Gressel Produce and later for Haviland Clay Works. He was a member of the Lion’s Club in Delphos and enjoyed wood working, especially with his best friend Willie Vasquez. Dick suffered a traumatic head injury in 1980 and the family relocated to Rome, OH in 1981.
He is survived by his wife Chris Hiestan, of Orwell, daughters Betsy (Johnny) Heckard of Toledo, Janet (Joseph) Krasno of Simi Valley, CA, four grandchildren: Branden David, Jayla Florence, Alena Tybe and Ethan Richard; sisters Alice Jean Klaus, Eileen Sheets and Kathryn Kosman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dick is preceded in death by his parents Lee and Beatrice (Foust) Hiestan.
Two memorial services will be held: Dick’s life will be celebrated at Rome Presbyterian Church, 5185 State Rt. 45, Rome, OH 44085 officiated by Rev. Sandy Seaton-Todd on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 1:00 p.m., Interment of ashes will follow at Rome Center Cemetery. Also, on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., a memorial service for Dick’s family, classmates and good friends will be officiated by Pastor Richard Mahlman at the, 310 West 2nd Street, Delphos, OH 45833.
