Mildred Barta Obituary

Mildred Lucile Smith Barta, age 96, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, formerly of Orwell and Rome, (Ashtabula Co.) Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2019.   Mrs. Barta retired from her  insurance agency and tax preparation business, Mildred Barta Associates, Inc.  in 1987. She was previously employed at Kennametal, Inc. where she served as the treasurer of the credit union.  She also supported the family business, Barta Motor Sales, as the bookkeeper and parts runner.  During the war years she worked at Packard Electric.

Mildred began her life in the Rome Presbyterian Church.  She was a faithful member of the Orwell North Church for over seventy years  where she sang in the choir and served as an elder, deacon, treasurer, women’s’ association president, and a Bible and Sunday school teacher. She was a past matron of Emerald Chapter #96 O.E.S. and a current member of Covered Bridge Chapter #591.  Mildred was an Ohio Grange member for 82 years and was a past master of the Rome Grange. She was also a past president of the Grand Valley Chamber of Commerce.  In recent years she was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Hopkinsville, Ky.

Mildred was born December 11, 1922 in Rome, Ohio, the daughter of Malcolm Vine and Eleanor House Smith.  She is survived by her children the Rev. Dr. Anthony R. Barta  (Carol),  Hopkinsville, KY and Marlane B. Nibert, Westerville, OH, grandchildren Jennifer Marie Johns, Erie, PA, the Rev. Mary Eleanor Johns-Kelley (Eric), Carmichaels, PA , Nathanael Calvin Barta, Murrysville, PA, Harry Holland Johns IV, (Becca Davis), Delaware, OH, Marlise Alayna Barta, Chicago, IL, Shana Abigail Johns Heckel  (William),Westerville, OH, great-grandchildren, Sophia Marie Bucci, Joseph Rudolph Bucci, Mila Elizabeth Heckel, Elizabeth Jane Kelley, Gavin Robert Heckel, Grayson Christopher Heckel, and Karoline Evelyn Kelley and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Rudolph Barta; her sisters, Esther Ann Smith Nagle, Martha Frances Smith Adams, Carolyn Marie Tancre Burn, Ruth Patricia Tancre Sanfilippo,  and her brothers, Maurice Smith, Walter Emory Smith, and Roy John Tancre.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Orwell North Presbyterian Church,  135 N. Maple St., Orwell, Ohio on Saturday,  August 24th at 2 p.m.  All are welcome to celebrate the life of Mildred with the family.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Orwell North Church.
