Marlan Clyde Alderman

Orwell - Marlan C. Alderman, age 93, of Orwell, died peacefully at Briar Hill Health Care Residence in Middlefield on Monday, April 10, 2017.He was the son of Wayne and Marie (Bernick) Alderman, born August 16, 1923 in Windsor.

Marlan was married to Marian E. (McCalmont) Alderman on May 11, 1947.Marlan was a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County, living in Windsor, Jefferson, Andover, and finally Orwell.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor during Marlan and Marian's senior year in high school marked the entrance of the United States into World War II. Like many of his peers, after graduating in the spring of 1942, Marlan entered the military, joining the Navy. Following graduation from the U.S. Naval Training Station Great Lakes, he was eventually assigned to the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans (CA-32), and spent the war in the Pacific Theater as a Radioman Second Class. At the end of the war, Marlan processed out of the Navy at the place where it all began, Naval Station Pearl Harbor. In the spring of 2014, he and Marian visited Pearl Harbor for the first time since the war, a very moving experience for them both. Upon his return to civilian life, Marlan continued his education in radio and electronics at Kent State University. He worked for years at George Smith's radio/TV business in Orwell, and eventually started his own radio and TV sales and repair business, operating out of the family home in Windsor. At the same time, he was a bus driver for Grand Valley Schools, and worked at Chardon Rubber. Marlan retired in 1985 and for the next three decades, he and Marian were fixtures at Windsor and Saybrook United Methodist Churches, Grand Valley school functions, the Windsor Historical Society, the VFW, and the local community as a whole. During this time, he also served as a Windsor Township Trustee, worked for the Ashtabula Sheriff Department in Jefferson, and also was a founding member of the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department. Marlan loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and family get-togethers involved Marian playing the piano with the family singing along. At times when he and Marian were home alone, Marian frequently played tunes from the 1940's while Marlan whistled in accompaniment, because he loved to hear her play.

Marlan is survived by four children - Douglas (Grace) of Oak Hill, Virginia, Marla (John) Dolan of Colebrook, Holly (Hersh Chaim) Huber of St. Louis, Missouri, and Gregory (Jenni) of Muncie, Indiana; several nieces, 12 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Merlan and sister Norma, son James and by his beloved Marian, who died just four months previously in December 2016. Marlan was lost - incomplete - without Marian, and mourned her deeply until he joined her in Heaven. They are finally together again, forever.

Visitation will take place from 3:00 - 4:45 PM Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Windsor United Methodist Church in Windsor, Ohio. At 5:00 PM, a memorial service with military honors will follow the visitation. A private burial service will be held the next morning at Windsor Cemetery. Both services will be officiated by Pastor Laurie Krieg.
